The Words that Builds Us
The Words that Builds Us is a series of illustration and installation visualizing the influence of language. Relating to Monica's personal experience as an international student, the project visualizes the steps she takes to take control of the situation she is in and overcomes the outside voices targeting her identity.
The three illustrations are inspired by each of the phrases after Monica's immigration to Canada and words people used towards her: from "foreigner" to "seeking" to "acceptance".
Using an LED light and a paper-cut pattern, Monica casted a shadow onto the projected illustrations using the shadow element as part of the concept, symbolizes the unseeing influence of words.
